Even before cell phones and the proliferation of modern technology, this was a problem. Procrastination is in human nature, and getting down to business isn’t always easy. Distractions have multiplied exponentially. It can be an incredible act of will sometimes to just sit in quiet. At the moment that I’m typing this, I’m listening to a podcast at the same time …. There is so much information available in our world, all the time. Some of it of higher quality than other sources. This is an incredible resource, and not something to regret. But it is something to engage with thoughtfully. The human brain needs silence as much as it needs activity. There’s a drive to maximum productivity these days, multitasking being the norm. But we also know from brain studies that multitasking doesn’t work ; we’re switching from one task to another quickly, and sometimes we are doing them badly. Are we wasting our life by trying to do too much? I’d argue that the skill needed for this age is prioritization, and then the ability to say ‘no’. I am by no means perfect at this. Like everyone, I am a work in progress.
